A Resource for Cooperative Extension

People who haven’t worked with Extension struggle to understand just how vital the agents and specialists are to their farming communities. From organizing dinner talks to connecting producers with specialists, the agents on the ground in these communities keep farming alive in the good times and the bad.

My firm supports Cooperative Extension by providing practical, plain-spoken talks on the legal issues faced by farmers. These issues include farm succession, entity selection, farm tax, pesticide regulation, among others.

Farm Succession

Farm succession is a uniquely challenging issue for Extension agents to provide resources for. Every farm family has their own circumstances, many of which are difficult to even discuss. Many communities lack trusted legal resources on the matter, which only creates confusion on how things work when the next generation takes over.

These issues, when combined with the demand for farmland for non-agricultural uses, create a huge strain on Extension agents.

By building real, long-term relationships with Extension through talks and workshops, I provide practical legal guidance that helps farm families move from one generation to the next with clarity and confidence.

Farming is a perfect storm for legal liability: high value assets like land and equipment combined with high risk from large livestock, dangerous work conditions, and oftentimes open invitations to the public to enter their land.

Farmers need to understand how to protect their assets, but there are a lot of considerations between sole proprietorships, general partnerships, S Corps, and LLCs. Beyond the type of entity, farmers also need to know how and when to use multiple entities to maximize the protection of their farm.

Farm Tax

Farm tax questions are some of the most common and most complicated issues Extension agents face. Producers want clear answers about mileage deductions, business expenses, capital gains tax, and how estate tax rules affect succession planning. These are practical questions with real financial consequences.

These presentations focus on everyday tax issues that directly affect farm families, including deducting vehicle use, understanding what counts as an ordinary and necessary business expense, capital gains exposure when selling assets, and how employing children can be used as a legitimate tax strategy.

The goal is to equip producers with straightforward, accurate information they can use to help producers think ahead, reduce risk, and avoid costly mistakes.
